One of her Father's favorites, this early oil on canvas by Susan Cua captures the timeless romance of Venice, Italy, a city where water, architecture, and light merge into a living work of art. Painted during the artist’s formative years at her first "Paint Away Holiday" in Italy, the piece reveals the beginnings of Cua’s lifelong fascination with atmosphere and place. The gentle movement of the canal reflects the warm tones of historic Venetian buildings, while the soft play of light evokes the quiet rhythm of everyday life in this iconic floating city.
In this composition, the viewer is invited to wander visually through narrow waterways and sun-washed facades, experiencing Venice not as a crowded destination, but as a moment of calm reflection. The brushwork retains a freshness and immediacy characteristic of an artist exploring and developing her voice, yet already demonstrating a strong sensitivity to color harmony and spatial depth.
This painting has been exhibited only twice, making it a particularly rare piece within the artist’s body of work. Its most recent showing was at Coffee Lab & Roasters, where visitors were able to experience this early Venetian study alongside other works from Cua’s evolving portfolio.
As both a historical glimpse into the artist’s early career and a tribute to one of the world’s most enchanting cities, this work stands as a quiet but powerful reminder of how place, memory, and artistic discovery come together on canvas.
