"Northwestern University" The Shakespeare Garden" | Pastel On Paper | By Susan Cua

This pastel on paper captures the quiet beauty of the Shakespeare Garden on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston. Known as one of the university’s most intimate and reflective spaces, the garden has long been a place where students pause between classes, read, or simply enjoy the calm presence of nature. In this work, artist Susan Cua transforms that familiar campus setting into a contemplative visual study of atmosphere, color, and memory.

Working in pastel, Cua emphasizes the softness and immediacy of the medium to evoke the layered textures of foliage, pathways, and filtered light. The composition leads the viewer’s eye gently through the garden space, allowing the natural elements to unfold gradually rather than presenting them in rigid detail. The pastel strokes create a luminous surface where greens, warm earth tones, and soft highlights interact to suggest sunlight moving through leaves and branches

.

The painting leans toward an impressionist interpretation of place. Cua’s marks remain visible and energetic, allowing the viewer to sense the artist’s presence and observation in the act of drawing. The result is a work that balances representation with emotion: the garden is recognizable, yet it is also filtered through the artist’s personal experience of the space.
