This pastel landscape by Susan Cua is inspired by her many visits to Lake Tahoe with her family. the work leans toward an expressive interpretation of the landscape, focusing on atmosphere and feeling.

The lake stretches across the center of the composition in deep, layered blues. The pastel is applied softly, allowing the pigments to blend and dissolve into one another, creating the impression of moving water and shifting light. A small dark island (Fannette Island) sits quietly in the middle distance, giving the eye a place to rest amid the wide openness of the lake.

Beyond the water, the mountains rise in rounded forms, rendered in darker tones of blue and indigo. Their shapes are simplified, almost abstracted, emphasizing mood over detail. The sky above them occupies much of the composition and is built from sweeping bands of pale blue, green, and white. These soft horizontal movements give the painting a sense of calm air drifting across the scene.

At the bottom edge, faint silhouettes of trees appear in shadow, grounding the composition and suggesting the viewer’s vantage point from the shore. The overall palette—cool blues, aquas, and misty whites—captures the quiet stillness often experienced around the lake.

In this piece, Susan Cua focuses less on precise geography and more on the memory of a place. The landscape becomes a reflection of mood: open, peaceful, and contemplative, much like the experience of standing before the wide waters of Lake Tahoe.
