This pastel painting by Susan Cua captures a quiet, reflective moment near the iconic Crown Fountain in Millennium Park, one of the most recognizable public spaces in Chicago. Ms. Cua presents the scene with a contemplative calm. The broad walkway stretches forward, its wet surface reflecting muted city lights and colors, creating a soft mirror that leads the viewer deeper into the work.

The towering digital monolith of the Crown Fountain stands prominently in the center, glowing with abstract tones of rose, lavender, and pale light. The familiar video faces that normally animate the structure are suggested through impressionistic marks rather than literal detail, allowing the viewer to sense their presence rather than clearly see them. This interpretation echoes the spirit of the fountain’s creator, Jaume Plensa, whose work merges technology, architecture, and the human face as symbols of urban life.

Surrounding skyscrapers rise softly into the atmosphere, rendered in elongated strokes of pastel greens, grays, and warm vertical accents. These buildings form a distant skyline that frames the fountain and situates the scene firmly within Chicago’s architectural landscape. The trees lining the plaza introduce darker organic tones that balance the cool concrete and glass of the city.

Near the base of the fountain, a solitary figure stands, small against the monumental scale of the structure. This subtle human presence adds emotional depth to the painting, emphasizing the relationship between the individual and the vast urban environment. The reflective pavement beneath the figure glimmers with layered pastel textures, suggesting recent rain and enhancing the dreamlike quality of the scene.

Through loose brushlike pastel strokes and atmospheric color blending, Susan Cua transforms a famous public landmark into a moment of introspection. The painting feels less like a snapshot of a place and more like a memory of walking through Millennium Park after rainfall—when the city quiets, reflections deepen, and the monumental art of Crown Fountain becomes almost meditative.
